Annual Meeting – June 25, 2006  -  Las Vegas Hilton Hotel, Pavillion 11 meeting room

 

Meeting called to order at 11:45 am

 

-         Roll call – a note pad was passed around to list the names of attendees – 13 total

-         Officers/directors present: Jim Goodwin, Beth Standlee, Bob Cosgrove, Walt Steinsiek, Jim Wyckoff

-         Others: Jerry Ramig, Tom Cascone, Jim Dressel, Len Nicholson, Bill Del Palacio, Pete Fedynich, Mark Miller

Report of Officers

  • President: Jim Goodwin briefly outlined progress – “a pretty good year”

28th year

-         designed new member application brochure and quarterly newsletter

-         membership increased from 17 to 70+

-         opened membership to entire industry

-         philosophy - national organization should be professional, but regional groups like SBWA don’t have enough professionals, so should be mostly fraternal

-         have sent and received over 500 emails during the past 15 months

-         established website at no cost to SBWA – Has been maintained by CJ Goodwin – www.southernbowlingwriters.com

-         planned Roast – Jeanie Hulsey first honoree

-         SBWA has been active in BWAA and BPAA

-         established new awards

- Dick Weber Award – College and High School Bowler of Year (High School will start next year)

-         Dick Weber Award Winner – Bill Lillard

-         Collegiate B of Y – Stefanie Nation, Central Florida University

   Brian Valenta, Lindenwood University (Missouri)

-         High School Award deferred til next year to involve coaches

-         SBWA B of Y – Lynda Barnes

                                   no men’s winner for 2005

-         Cartoonist Award – Walt Steinsiek will announce winner at Roast – (Bud Grace, Piranha Club) in 400 newspapers

-         President’s Award – to John Berglund, BPAA

 

Committee Reports –

-         Craig Mathews not present.  Goodwin said email was sent to members.  Got 6 great candidates – 36 voters picked Lillard as winner.  5 remain on next year’s ballot

-         Barnhardt not present – already heard about Collegiate and H.S.

-         Legislative – Bob Cosgrove – no action needed, most votes by email now

-         Nominating Committee – Greg Stock and Glenda not present – deferred

-         SBWA B of Y – Jim Wyckoff – PBA gives their awards by season – we are by calendar year – we will have men’s award next year

 

Minutes of past meeting are in book prepared by Don Wright.  Walt made motion to accept minutes, second Bill Del Palacio

 

-         Questions from Jerry Ramig about 17 states – JG explained that correction was made to drop the District of Columbia and Northern States.  Vote was via email and passed without objection

-         Beth Standlee asked if anyone would be taking dues at Roast.  Goodwin’s response “yeah, you”.  Standlee’s response, “So that’s how things work around here.”

-         Goodwin talks about Roast.  Says it was opened to anyone because we want a lot of people at the first one.  Fund raiser – cookie jar of nickels $5 per guess - $25 worth gets membership – poster – not ready for fundraiser – will do later and sell on website

NEW BUSINESS

Motion from Walt Steinsiek – that past presidents not be required to pay dues, but that they should make a contribution for at least $10 to SBWA.  Seconded by Wyckoff.

Discussion – Goodwin pointed out dues were lowered to $10 and that we probably have 10-20 without dues.

Goodwin made Walt the Chairman of new committee to come up with a cause for donation.

motion carried – (by show of hands)

 

Lapel pins – two designs offered – after discussion, the group decided to defer and send out designs to entire membership for vote.

 

Term limits – Frank Barnhardt suggest 5 years max, Goodwin said 4 is OK.  Again, it was the consensus that it be sent to entire membership, motion by Bill Del Palacio second by Mark Miller.  Standlee suggest we give members a choice of 3,4 or 5 year limit.  Approved unanimously.

 

Reimbursement of Don Wright for expenses - $279.66 – approved unanimously and continue to do so in the future

 

Election – motion to elect entire slate for next year – motion by Bill Del Palacio, second by Mark Miller.  approved unanimously
