Southern Bowling Writers Association
Policies and Procedures

A. INTRODUCTION: The Southern Bowling Writers Association (SBWA) Policy and Procedure guidelines supplement the Constitution and Bylaws by providing specific policy and procedures to follow in the conduct of association activities.
B. PURPOSE AND SCOPE: The SBWA Policy and Procedure guidelines are designed to provide the Board of Directors and the membership with easy access to information about the policies and procedures which govern the association. It is not intended to include a description of every function, or activity of the association. It is intended to be a working document that can be changed and updated as necessary.
C. POLICY AND PROCEDURES:
- AWARDS PROGRAM – The association will develop an awards program to recognize individual achievement on the lanes, or outstanding contributions to the industry and this association by individuals, members, and organizations. All such awards when established will be attached to the Policy and Procedure guidelines as a matter of record. (See attachments – a. thru f )
- DUES – All members of the association with the exception of honorary members are dues paying members. Annual dues are $10. and are valid from 1 January through 31 December. Membership shall lapse if not paid by March 31 of that same year.
- ELECTIVE OFFICE – Only regular members residing in the SBWA, 17 state, geographical area may vote for, or be elected as officers, or members of the Board of Directors. All members may be appointed to serve on committees except the Audit and Nominating committees. A candidate for office may not serve as a member of the Nominating Committee. Should this happen, the President will appoint a replacement to the committee.
- MEMBERSHIP PIN – A membership pin will be issued to each member joining the SBWA. The current stock of pins will be issued until exhausted. The SBWA will then decide on future pins.
- MOTTO AND LOGO – The SBWA motto is – “Focused on the Future” The SBWA logo is an attachment. (Attachment g )
- NEWSLETTER – The SBWA will publish a newsletter each quarter. The official name of the newsletter is “Bowling Southern Style.” Email news briefs will also be sent out periodically to all members and media.
- PARLIAMENTARIAN – The President will appoint a qualified member to serve as the SBWA Parliamentarian.
- SALARIES AND EXPENSES – Any authorized salaries, or personal expense policy will be determined by the Board of Directors and submitted to the Regular Members for approval.
- VOTING – All members, except Honorary members, are entitled to vote on all issues except the election of officers and members of the Board of Directors, or when prohibited by any provision of the Bylaws. The President has the authority to request a vote via e-mail on any issue pertaining to the SBWA.
- MEMBERSHIP – The Executive Director will approve all membership applications meeting the SBWA criteria. Disapproval of any application will be done by the elected officer’s majority vote.

a. Dick Weber Distinguished Service Award - Named for bowling legend Dick Weber, who was a champion and ambassador for 50+ years. This award will be given to a person in the industry who performs some outstanding service or achievement during the year that advances the progress of the game. The honoree must come from one of the 17 states within the associations’ geographical area. (Majority vote as of 23 July 2007)
b. Presidents Award - At the discretion of the SBWA President, the award goes to someone in bowling who displays optimism and enthusiasm for the game, and maintains a positive and pleasant attitude about the sport and its participants.
c. Collegiate Bowlers of the Year - These two awards go to the male and female college students in the 17 southern states who achieve an outstanding record in the sport, and good character on and off the lanes. Letters will be sent in October to coaches asking for nominees. The SBWA Collegiate/High School Committee will make final selections.
d. High School Bowlers of the Year - These two awards go to the male and female high school students in the 17 southern states who achieve an outstanding record in the sport, and good character on and off the lanes. Letters will be sent in October to coaches asking for nominees. The SBWA Collegiate/High School Committee will make final selections.
e. The Walt Steinsiek Cartoonist of the Year Award - With the agreement of founder Walt Steinsiek who is a SBWA past president and life member, SBWA has officially adopted the former BWAA Cartoonist Award and renamed it the Walt Steinsiek Award in honor of its founder. This award goes to a talented cartoonist who uses a bowling theme in his/her work each year. The award is currently sponsored by Pinacle Events, and Steinsiek serves as chairman of the selection committee.
f. SBWA Male and Female Regional Bowlers of the Year - These two awards go to the male and female regional bowlers from within the 17 states of the association who achieve outstanding performance in the sport, and good character on and off the lanes. The SBWA Regional Bowlers of the Year Committee will make final selections. |
